Benidorm

A vibrant city by two golden bays

Benidorm is far more than a holiday destination: it is a lively, year-round Mediterranean city with two long sandy beaches, a charming old town on a rocky headland, excellent services and a skyline framed by mountains. For many, it is the most convenient place to live on the Costa Blanca.

General

A city that never stops

Benidorm has around 73,000 inhabitants and many more residents who spend part of the year here. It offers everything a city can offer – shopping, private and public healthcare, schools, sports facilities and entertainment – combined with a famously mild climate and more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

Alicante airport is about 45 minutes away by car, the AP-7 motorway and the TRAM coastal line connect Benidorm with the whole Costa Blanca, and Altea, Finestrat and Villajoyosa are just a few minutes away.

Areas

Where to live in Benidorm

Each part of Benidorm has its own character:

  • Old town – traditional streets, tapas bars and squares on the headland between the two beaches, close to the Balcón del Mediterráneo.
  • Levante and Rincón de Loix – lively seafront apartments near the beach, restaurants and nightlife, with views of the bay.
  • Poniente – a calmer, more residential seafront with modern apartment buildings, a spectacular promenade and family-friendly beaches.
  • Hills and outskirts – villas and residential complexes with pools and sea views around the Serra Gelada and towards Finestrat and the golf courses.

Beaches

Two of the best-known beaches in Spain

Levante and Poniente stretch for several kilometres of fine golden sand, gently sloping into calm, clear water – ideal for families. Both are lined with wide promenades, and Poniente's award-winning seafront is an architectural landmark in itself.

Between them lies the small Mal Pas cove beneath the old town, and the more natural beaches of La Cala de Finestrat and Albir are only minutes away.

Nature

Island, mountains and sea

Just offshore lies Benidorm Island, a protected natural area that can be visited by boat and is excellent for snorkelling. The Serra Gelada Natural Park rises behind Levante beach, with clifftop walks and amazing views over the city.

Inland, the mountains of Puig Campana, Ponoig and the Aitana range offer hiking, cycling and fresh mountain air.

Gastronomy

From tapas alley to fine dining

Benidorm's old town is famous for its tapas street, where dozens of bars serve pinchos and local wine. Across the city you will find everything from traditional Valencian rice dishes and fresh fish to cuisines from all over the world.

Several restaurants have earned recognition in leading gastronomic guides, and the city's markets offer fresh local produce every day.

Schools

A wide choice of schools

Benidorm has numerous public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as vocational training centres and music and language schools.

International families can choose from bilingual and international schools in Benidorm itself and in nearby Alfaz del Pi, La Nucía and Finestrat.

Sports

Sport in every form

From sailing, diving and paddle boarding to cycling, running along the promenades and hiking in the Serra Gelada, Benidorm is made for an active lifestyle. The city has a large municipal sports centre and hosts international events throughout the year.

Golfers can play at the courses of Villaitana and others nearby, and the theme parks – Terra Mítica, Aqualandia, Mundomar and Terra Natura – guarantee fun for the whole family.

Culture & festivals

Old town, viewpoints and festivals

The Balcón del Mediterráneo, a white balustraded viewpoint at the tip of the old town, offers one of the most famous views on the Costa Blanca. Next to it stands the church of San Jaime and Santa Ana with its blue dome.

The main fiestas in November honour the Virgen del Sufragio with parades, music and fireworks, and the city hosts concerts, music festivals and cultural events all year round.
