Costa Blanca North · Marina Alta
Gata de Gorgos is an authentic Valencian village known all over Spain for its guitars, wickerwork and palm weaving. With the Montgó on the horizon, a lively centre full of bars and quick access to Jávea and Dénia, it is a great choice for anyone looking for real village life close to the coast.
General
Gata de Gorgos has some 6,500 inhabitants and lies on the plain of the river Gorgos, between Jávea, Dénia and the Jalón Valley. Its main road is lined with craft shops selling wicker furniture, baskets and handmade guitars, and the village is famous for having more bars and restaurants per resident than almost anywhere in the region.
The AP-7 and N-332 are right next door, Jávea's beaches are around ten minutes away, and Valencia and Alicante airports can each be reached in about an hour.

Areas
Gata offers a choice between village life and countryside:

Beaches
Gata is an inland village, but the Arenal beach and the coves of Jávea are around ten minutes away by car, and the long sandy beaches of Dénia are just a little further. You get the best of both worlds: quieter village life at lower prices, with the Mediterranean on your doorstep.
Nature
The river Gorgos has carved spectacular gorges and pools around the village, and the surrounding hills – Els Serrillars, La Garganta and El Castellar – are criss-crossed by the GR 330 and several local trails. The Coves Roges caves, with prehistoric remains, are popular with walkers and climbers alike.

Gastronomy
Local specialities include pilotes de putxero (meatballs in broth), arròs al forn, sang amb ceba and the traditional Easter berenaret, as well as savoury coques from the local bakeries.
The terraced countryside is full of almond, olive and carob trees, and old riuraus – arched raisin-drying houses from the 19th century – recall the area's wine and raisin trade.

Schools
The village has public nursery and primary schools, and secondary pupils attend institutes in the neighbouring towns. Lessons are in Valencian and Spanish. Several international and British schools in Jávea, Benitachell and Dénia are within a 10 to 20-minute drive. Gata also has a health centre, pharmacies and supermarkets.
Sports
With quiet country roads and mountain climbs on all sides, Gata is popular with cyclists. Hikers and climbers head for the Gorgos gorges and the Coves Roges, the golf courses of Jávea and La Sella are around 15 minutes away, and the sea invites you to swim, dive and sail.
Culture & festivals
Palm weaving has been documented in Gata since the 15th century, and today the village is famous for its wicker furniture and baskets and for its guitar workshops, whose instruments are sold worldwide.
The main festivities in honour of the Crist del Calvari run from late July to 6 August, with bull running, the 'Quintos' tradition and a popular open-air paella night. Sant Antoni in January, Sant Joan in June and Sant Miquel in September complete the calendar.
