Benissa

A historic town with four kilometres of hidden coves

Benissa combines one of the best-preserved old towns of the Costa Blanca with a green, unspoilt coastline of small coves and villa areas. It is an authentic Valencian town with a calm pace of life, set between the sea, the vineyards and the mountains – and right in the heart of the Costa Blanca North.

General

Authentic, green and central

Benissa has around 12,000 inhabitants and lies between Calpe and Teulada-Moraira, a few kilometres inland from the sea. Its historic centre, officially protected for its heritage value, is full of noble houses, small squares and narrow streets, and the town has all everyday services, shops and a lively weekly market.

Thanks to its central location, Calpe, Moraira, Altea and Jávea are all within easy reach. Benissa has a TRAM station and direct access to the AP-7 motorway, and Alicante airport is about an hour away by car.

Areas

Where to live in Benissa

Benissa offers three very different settings:

  • Old town – restored townhouses and apartments in the historic centre, within walking distance of shops, cafés and services.
  • Benissa Costa – quiet, green villa areas such as Fanadix, La Fustera, Baladrar and San Jaime, close to the coves and the golf course.
  • Countryside – fincas and villas among vineyards, olive and almond groves in rural areas such as Pinos and Canor, with views of the Peñón de Ifach.

Beaches

Small coves and crystal-clear water

Benissa's four kilometres of coastline are a succession of small, natural coves rather than large resort beaches. La Fustera, with fine sand and a promenade, is the most popular and family-friendly, while Baladrar, Pinets, Llobella and l'Advocat are rocky coves perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

A coastal path links many of the coves, and the small fishing harbour of Les Bassetes offers a sailing club and a pleasant restaurant by the water.

Nature

From the sea to the mountains

Behind Benissa rise the Sierra de Bernia and the Sierra de Oltà, crossed by popular hiking routes with spectacular views over the coast. The hamlet of Pinos, at the foot of Bernia, is a good starting point for walks.

Between the town and the sea, the landscape is a patchwork of vineyards, olive and almond trees and pine woods, dotted with traditional riuraus and country houses.

Gastronomy

Honest Mediterranean cooking

Benissa is known for its traditional home cooking: rice dishes from the oven, putxero, stews and fresh fish from the coast, accompanied by local wine and olive oil. The old town has charming restaurants, and the coves offer beach bars with sea views.

For a taste of local produce, visit the weekly market or one of the seasonal food fairs, where you will find vegetables, olive oil, honey and pastries from the area.

Schools

Schools for every family

Benissa has public primary schools, such as CEIP Manuel Bru, and a secondary school, IES Josep Iborra, as well as a music school and sports clubs.

International families can choose from British and international schools within 20–30 minutes, for example in Benitachell, Jávea and Alfaz del Pi.

Sports

Golf, sailing and hiking

Golfers will feel at home at Ifach Golf, located in Benissa Costa itself, and sailors at the Club Náutico Les Bassetes. Diving, kayaking and paddle boarding along the coves are very popular.

The town has a sports centre with a swimming pool, tennis and padel courts, and the quiet countryside roads and mountain trails are ideal for cycling and hiking.

Culture & festivals

A living historic centre

The neo-Gothic church of the Puríssima Xiqueta, known as the 'Cathedral of the Marina Alta', dominates the old town. Nearby you can visit the Llotja de Contractació, the Casa-Museu dels Abargues and several old noble houses, one of which hosts a university campus.

The main fiesta, in honour of the Puríssima Xiqueta, is held in April with processions, music, fireworks and Moors and Christians. Christmas, Easter and the summer bring many other markets and cultural events.
