Dénia

Castle, harbour and twenty kilometres of coast

Dénia is the capital of the Marina Alta: a lively Mediterranean town at the foot of the Montgó, crowned by its castle and open to the sea with a busy harbour, fine sandy beaches and rocky coves. It offers big-town convenience with a relaxed, year-round village feel.

General

A complete town all year round

With around 45,000 inhabitants, Dénia is one of the largest towns on the Costa Blanca North. Hospitals, schools, supermarkets, boutiques and hundreds of restaurants make everyday life easy in every season, and the town has a large international community.

Ferries sail from the harbour to Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca, the AP-7 motorway is fifteen minutes away and both Valencia and Alicante airports can be reached in about an hour and a quarter.

Areas

Where to live in Dénia

From historic centre to beach villa, Dénia has something for everyone:

  • Town centre – the elegant Marqués de Campo boulevard, the Les Roques old quarter below the castle and Carrer Loreto, with apartments and townhouses close to everything.
  • Baix la Mar – the colourful former fishermen's quarter by the harbour, full of character, cafés and restaurants.
  • Les Marines – kilometres of beachfront north of town, with apartments, bungalows and villas a short walk from the sand.
  • Les Rotes – an exclusive residential area along the rocky coast towards Cap de Sant Antoni, with villas and sea views.
  • Montgó and countryside – villas on the slopes of the Montgó and in the villages of Jesús Pobre and La Xara, surrounded by nature.

Beaches

Sandy beaches and crystal-clear coves

North of the harbour, the beaches of Les Marines and Les Deveses stretch for around 20 km of fine golden sand – shallow, family-friendly and lined with beach bars. Several of them regularly fly the Blue Flag.

South of town the coastline changes completely: Les Rotes is a protected marine reserve of rocky platforms and turquoise water, perfect for snorkelling, with a beautiful coastal path towards the cape.

Nature

The Montgó and the Cap de Sant Antoni

The Montgó Natural Park rises to 753 metres right behind the town. Its trails lead past old farmhouses, caves and pine forests to breathtaking views over Dénia, Jávea and – on clear days – Ibiza. The neighbouring Cap de Sant Antoni marine reserve protects some of the richest seabeds on the coast.

Gastronomy

A UNESCO City of Gastronomy

Dénia was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015. Its star is the famous gamba roja, the sweet red prawn caught off the coast, followed by arròs a banda, all i pebre and suquet de peix.

You can eat in award-winning restaurants as well as in simple tapas bars in Baix la Mar or along Carrer Loreto, and the covered market is a feast of local fish, fruit and vegetables.

Schools

Education and healthcare

Dénia has many public and private nursery, primary and secondary schools, and several international schools offering British and other curricula can be found in Dénia and neighbouring Jávea. Marina Salud hospital in Dénia serves the whole region, and the town has a wide range of private clinics.

Sports

Sailing, golf and the outdoors

With its marinas and sailing clubs, Dénia is a water sports paradise: sailing, kayaking, diving, paddle boarding and kitesurfing. La Sella golf resort lies within the municipality, and cyclists, runners and hikers will find routes for every level, from the coastal promenade to the summit of the Montgó.

Culture & festivals

Festivals with a unique character

Dénia's most famous tradition is the Bous a la mar in July, when the bull run ends at the harbour and the bulls – and runners – end up in the water. The town also celebrates Falles in March and Moros i Cristians in August.

Visit the castle with its archaeological museum, stroll through Les Roques and Baix la Mar, and enjoy the many cultural events that keep Dénia lively throughout the year.
