Moraira

An elegant fishing village with coves, marina and pine-clad hills

Moraira is one of the most sought-after addresses on the Costa Blanca: a former fishing village with a picturesque harbour, golden beaches and crystal-clear coves, surrounded by green hills dotted with villas. It combines relaxed Mediterranean elegance with excellent restaurants and a lively year-round international community.

General

Mediterranean elegance, all year round

Moraira belongs to the municipality of Teulada-Moraira, which has around 12,000 inhabitants, a large share of them from northern Europe. The village centre is compact and walkable, with boutiques, cafés, a weekly market and a seafront promenade, and it remains pleasantly alive outside the summer season.

Strict planning has preserved Moraira's low-rise character: there are no high-rise blocks, only villas, small apartment complexes and green hillsides. Alicante airport is about an hour away and Valencia about an hour and a quarter.

Areas

Where to live in Moraira

From seafront apartments to hillside villas with panoramic views:

  • Village centre and El Portet – apartments and townhouses within walking distance of the beach, the marina and restaurants; El Portet is one of the most exclusive bays on the coast.
  • Cap Blanc and Pla del Mar – villas and apartments along the rocky coastline, often frontline or with direct sea views.
  • Hillside urbanisations – areas such as Benimeit, La Sabatera, Moravit and Paichi offer villas with pools and wide views over the sea and the Peñón de Ifach.
  • Inland towards Teulada – quieter, often more affordable villas among vineyards and pine forests, close to the historic town of Teulada.

Beaches

Golden sand and turquoise coves

L'Ampolla, Moraira's main beach, has fine golden sand, a promenade and Blue Flag status. The sheltered bay of El Portet, with its turquoise water and beach restaurants, is a favourite with families and snorkellers.

Along the rocky coast you will find small coves such as Cala Andragó and the Platgetes, ideal for swimming, paddle boarding and exploring by kayak.

Nature

Cliffs, pine forests and the Cap d'Or

The Cap d'Or headland, with its 16th-century watchtower, offers one of the most beautiful walks in the area, with spectacular cliffs and views over the bay, the Peñón de Ifach and – on clear days – Ibiza. Inland, pine-covered hills and vineyards invite you to explore on foot or by bike.

Gastronomy

Fine dining and Moscatel wine

Moraira is renowned for its restaurants, from fresh fish and seafood in the port to refined, award-winning cuisine. Local specialities include arròs a banda, caldero and grilled fish straight from the fish auction.

The surrounding vineyards produce the famous Teulada Moscatel, used for sweet and dry white wines and for the traditional raisins of the Marina Alta.

Schools

Schools and services

Teulada-Moraira has public nursery and primary schools as well as a secondary school, with lessons in Valencian and Spanish. Several leading international and British schools in Benitachell, Jávea and Calpe are within a 10 to 20-minute drive. Moraira has a health centre, and the nearest hospital is in Dénia.

Sports

Sailing, diving and golf

The marina and the yacht club offer sailing courses, boat trips and diving in clear water rich in marine life. Tennis and padel clubs, hiking trails and cycling routes are all close by, and the golf courses of Benissa, Jávea and La Sella are around 15 to 25 minutes away.

Culture & festivals

Castle, festivals and culture

Moraira's 18th-century castle stands right on the beach, built to protect the coast against pirates. In summer the village celebrates its fiestas with Moros i Cristians parades, music and fireworks.

The modern Teulada-Moraira auditorium hosts concerts and theatre throughout the year, and the historic old town of Teulada, a few minutes inland, is well worth a visit.
