Teulada

A historic hilltop town among vineyards, five minutes from the sea

Teulada is the historic heart of the municipality of Teulada-Moraira: a charming old town with a fortified church, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and pine-clad hills. It offers an authentic Spanish way of life at a gentler price than the coast, with the beaches of Moraira just a short drive away.

General

Authentic town life all year round

Teulada sits on a hill a few kilometres inland from Moraira, and together the two form a municipality of around 12,000 inhabitants. While Moraira is the seaside resort, Teulada is a working town where daily life goes on all year: local shops, bakeries, cafés, a weekly market and the town hall.

The AP-7 motorway runs right past the town, so Benissa, Jávea and Dénia are all within easy reach, and Alicante airport is about an hour away.

Nature

Vineyards, olive groves and hills

The landscape around Teulada is shaped by terraced fields, vineyards, almond and olive groves and old riuraus – the raisin-drying houses of the 18th and 19th centuries. Walking routes such as the Ruta Vicentina and the Barranc de la Xurra trail, the Mirador de les Sorts viewpoint and the coastal wetland of the Senillar are all close by.

Gastronomy

Moscatel wine and local flavours

Teulada is wine country: the local Moscatel grape is used for sweet and dry white wines as well as for raisins. Local dishes include arròs a banda, paella with sardines and spinach, and the traditional sweet 'dames' eaten on Saint Blaise's day.

Traditional restaurants in the old town serve hearty Valencian cooking, while Moraira's harbour restaurants offer fresh fish just five minutes away.

Schools

Schools and services

Teulada has public nursery and primary schools and the municipality's secondary school, with lessons in Valencian and Spanish. Several leading international and British schools in Benitachell, Jávea and Calpe are within a 10 to 20-minute drive. The town has a health centre, and the nearest hospital is in Dénia.

Sports

Walking, cycling and the sea

Quiet country roads and trails make Teulada a great base for cycling and hiking. The municipal sports facilities offer football, tennis and padel, the Moraira yacht club is five minutes away for sailing and diving, and the golf courses of Benissa and Jávea are just a short drive.

Culture & festivals

History, culture and fiestas

Teulada's fortified church of Santa Caterina was built to protect the population against pirate raids, and the elegant Sala de Jurats i Justícies was the town's historic courthouse. The modern Teulada-Moraira auditorium, surrounded by vineyards, hosts concerts and theatre all year round.

The main festivities in honour of Sant Vicent Ferrer are celebrated in the week after Easter, and Sant Antoni and the Nit de Sant Joan are also highlights of the calendar.
