Costa Blanca · Alicante
Villajoyosa – La Vila Joiosa in Valencian – is famous for its rainbow of brightly painted houses along the seafront, its long chocolate-making tradition and its spectacular Moors and Christians festival. An authentic, year-round Mediterranean town with beautiful beaches, just 30 minutes from Alicante.
General
Villajoyosa has around 36,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Marina Baixa region. Unlike many resorts, it remains a genuine Spanish town with a working fishing port, a lively old town and a full range of shops and services – including the regional Marina Baixa hospital.
Benidorm is about 10 minutes away and Alicante around 30 minutes, with Alicante airport some 35–40 minutes by car. The coastal TRAM line and the AP-7 motorway connect the town with the rest of the Costa Blanca.

Areas
Villajoyosa offers a wide variety of homes and settings:

Beaches
Villajoyosa has several kilometres of coastline, from the central town beach in front of the colourful houses to the long, peaceful beaches of Paraíso and El Torres. Many of them regularly fly the Blue Flag.
Along the coast you will also find small, natural coves with clear water, perfect for snorkelling and a quiet swim away from the crowds.

Nature
Coastal paths lead past old watchtowers such as the Torreón de la Malladeta and along cliffs and coves. Behind the town, the countryside of almond and olive groves rises towards the mountains of the Marina Baixa.
Puig Campana, the Aitana range and the Sierra de Orxeta are close by for hiking, cycling and enjoying spectacular views over the coast.

Gastronomy
Villajoyosa has been making chocolate for more than two centuries, and well-known chocolate factories still operate here. You can visit their museums and shops and taste chocolate in every form.
The fishing port supplies the town's restaurants with fresh fish and seafood every day, and local specialities include rice dishes such as arròs amb caldo and the traditional fish stews of the fishermen.
Schools
Villajoyosa has numerous public primary schools and several secondary schools, as well as vocational training, music and language schools.
International families can choose from bilingual and international schools in Villajoyosa, Benidorm and the Alicante area, all within easy reach.
Sports
The marina and sailing club offer sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding, and the clear water around the coves is ideal for diving and snorkelling. Cyclists and hikers can head inland to the quiet mountain roads and trails.
Golfers have several courses within a short drive, and the town has good municipal sports facilities, tennis and padel clubs.
Culture & festivals
Every July, Villajoyosa celebrates its Moors and Christians festival in honour of Santa Marta, famous for the spectacular 'Desembarco' – the re-enactment of a Moorish landing on the beach at dawn.
The town's history, from Roman times to its seafaring past, is presented in the modern Vilamuseu museum, and the old town with its narrow streets and the Gothic church of the Assumption is a pleasure to explore.
