Costa Blanca North · Alicante
Calpe is instantly recognisable by the Peñón de Ifach, the mighty rock that rises 332 metres straight out of the sea. Around it lie wide sandy beaches, a historic old town, a busy fishing port and a salt lake with flamingos – all the ingredients of a lively, international town with Mediterranean flavour all year round.
General
Calpe has around 25,000 inhabitants and lies between Altea and Benissa, roughly halfway between Alicante and Valencia. A large share of its residents come from other countries, which gives the town a cosmopolitan feel, while its fishing port and old town keep its Valencian character alive.
Everything you need is close at hand: supermarkets, a health centre, banks, international shops and restaurants. The TRAM coastal line connects Calpe with Altea and Benidorm, and Alicante airport is about 55 minutes away by car. The climate is mild and sunny, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

Areas
Calpe offers a wide choice of homes, from seafront apartments to villas in the hills:

Beaches
Calpe has two large sandy beaches on either side of the Peñón: Arenal-Bol, next to the old town, and La Fossa (Levante), at the foot of the rock, both with promenades, beach bars and lifeguards in summer.
Along the coast you will also find smaller beaches and rocky coves such as Cantal Roig, Calalga, Les Bassetes and El Racó, which are ideal for snorkelling in crystal-clear water.

Nature
The Peñón de Ifach is a protected Natural Park. A path leads up through a tunnel in the rock to the summit, rewarding hikers with views reaching as far as Ibiza on clear days. Its cliffs are home to rare plants and nesting sea birds.
In the middle of town lie the Salinas de Calpe, an old salt lake where flamingos, herons and other water birds can often be seen. The Sierra de Oltà and the Sierra de Bernia offer more hiking just inland.

Gastronomy
Calpe still has an active fishing fleet. In the afternoon you can watch the boats come in and follow the fish auction at the Lonja from a public gallery – and then taste the catch in the restaurants around the port.
Local favourites include arròs del senyoret, arroz a banda, fresh red prawns and grilled fish. The town also offers a wide variety of international cuisine, cosy tapas bars in the old town and fine-dining restaurants.

Schools
Calpe has several public primary schools and a secondary school (IES), as well as a music school and sports academies.
International families can choose from British and other international schools in the wider area, such as in Alfaz del Pi and Jávea, within a reasonable drive.
Sports
The Real Club Náutico de Calpe is one of the most active sailing clubs on the coast, and diving, kayaking and paddle boarding around the Peñón are very popular. Cyclists love the mountain roads inland.
Golfers can play at Ifach Golf in nearby Benissa and at several other courses within half an hour. The town also has a municipal sports centre, tennis and padel courts and a lively running and walking community.

Culture & festivals
Calpe's history goes back to Roman times: the Baños de la Reina are the remains of a Roman fish farm carved into the rock by the sea. In the old town you can visit the Torreó de la Peça, the old church and several small museums.
The biggest celebration is the patron saint fiesta in October, with colourful Moors and Christians parades. Throughout the year there are markets, concerts and gastronomic events, such as the popular tapas routes.
