El Verger & Els Poblets

Two neighbouring villages between orange groves and the sea

El Verger and Els Poblets sit side by side at the northern tip of the Marina Alta, just minutes from Dénia. Together they offer authentic village life, a quiet stretch of coast, mountain views and prices that are often more accessible than in the big coastal towns.

General

Village life close to everything

El Verger has around 5,000 inhabitants and is a lively working village on the N-332, about 3 km from the sea and 8 km from Dénia. Its neighbour Els Poblets – made up of the hamlets of Setla, Mira-rosa and Miraflor – has close to 3,000 residents and a large international community. Supermarkets, pharmacies, bars and the AP-7 motorway are all close at hand.

The setting is green and flat, with orange groves, vegetable gardens and the Segària mountains as a backdrop. Winters are mild and sunny, and the beaches of Els Poblets and Dénia are just a few minutes away.

Areas

Where to live

Each village has its own character:

  • El Verger village – a traditional main street, the neoclassical church and the medieval Torre del Comendador, with townhouses and apartments within walking distance of shops and schools.
  • Els Poblets – quiet residential streets around Setla, Mira-rosa and Miraflor, with villas and bungalows on generous plots.
  • L'Almadrava coast – homes just behind the beach of l'Almadrava, from where you can walk along the sea towards Les Deveses.
  • Countryside – detached villas and fincas among the orange groves at the foot of the Segària, with mountain views and plenty of privacy.

Beaches

A quiet coastline

Els Poblets has about one kilometre of coast. The beach of l'Almadrava, where the river Girona meets the sea, is a natural pebble beach that is rarely crowded.

Right next to it stretch the long sandy beaches of Les Deveses and Les Marines in Dénia – ideal for long walks, families with children and water sports, with beach bars and restaurants along the way.

Nature

River, mountains and wetlands

The river Girona runs through both villages and is lined with walking paths. Behind them rises the Segària range, with hiking trails and wide views over the coast, while the wetlands of the Marjal de Pego-Oliva and the Montgó Natural Park are only a short drive away.

Gastronomy

Village cooking with Marina Alta flavours

Local cooking is simple and full of flavour: rice with broad beans, 'bull' with onion – a historic dish linked to the area's tuna fishing – octopus stew and the savoury coques sold in every bakery.

Vegetables and citrus from the surrounding fields fill the weekly markets, and the restaurants range from traditional village bars to international cuisine.

Schools

Schools and services

The area has public nursery and primary schools, and secondary pupils attend the institutes in the neighbouring towns. Lessons are taught in Valencian and Spanish, with English as a foreign language.

Several international and British schools in Dénia and Jávea are within a 20 to 30-minute drive. El Verger also has a bright, modern public library.

Sports

An active outdoor life

The flat country roads are perfect for cycling, while the Segària and the Montgó offer hiking and mountain biking. On the beaches of Dénia you can kitesurf, paddle board and sail, several golf courses are within half an hour, and El Verger has municipal sports facilities for football, tennis and padel.

Culture & festivals

Festivals and heritage

El Verger celebrates Moros i Cristians with colourful parades, and its cultural centre La Fàbrica de Sabó hosts concerts and exhibitions. Els Poblets honours El Diví Salvador from late July to early August – also with Moros i Cristians – and celebrates Sant Antoni and the bonfires of Sant Joan.

Heritage includes the Roman pottery site of l'Almadrava, where amphorae were made between the 1st and 5th centuries, the 14th-century Torre de Mira-rosa and El Verger's Torre del Comendador. Good to know: Dénia's ferry port is ten minutes away and both Valencia and Alicante airports are about an hour's drive.
