Benitachell

A village of vineyards high above the cliffs

Benitachell (Poble Nou de Benitatxell) is a small, quiet village between Jávea and Moraira. Its territory stretches from muscatel vineyards to spectacular cliffs and hidden coves, with the Cumbre del Sol residential area offering some of the finest sea views on the Costa Blanca.

General

Small village, big views

Benitachell has around 5,000 inhabitants, a large share of them from other European countries. The village centre has kept its traditional character, with a church square, local shops, bars and a weekly market, while most homes are spread across green residential areas on the slopes towards the sea.

Jávea and Moraira are each about 10 minutes away by car, and Teulada and Benissa are close by too. Alicante airport is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes away and Valencia airport around 1 hour 30 minutes. The microclimate is mild and sunny all year round.

Most properties in Benitachell are villas, but there is a choice of settings:

  • Village centre – townhouses and apartments within walking distance of shops, cafés, the school and the health centre.
  • Cumbre del Sol – a large, well-kept residential area on the headland, with modern villas, apartments and panoramic sea views.
  • Racó del Galeno – a quiet villa area close to the cliffs and coves, popular for its peace and nature.
  • Countryside – villas and fincas among vineyards and almond trees between the village and Teulada.

Beaches

Hidden coves and crystal-clear water

Benitachell's coastline is made up of high cliffs rather than long sandy beaches. Its gem is Cala del Moraig, a pebble cove with turquoise water and the impressive Cova dels Arcs sea cave, a favourite with snorkellers and divers.

Cala Llebeig, reached on foot along the coastal path, is one of the most unspoilt spots on the Costa Blanca, with old fishermen's huts carved into the rock. For sandy beaches, Moraira and the Arenal in Jávea are only a short drive away.

Nature

Cliffs, trails and the open sea

The cliffs of Benitachell rise up to around 160 metres above the sea and are part of a protected marine area. Well-marked footpaths, such as the cliff route from Cala del Moraig to Cala Llebeig and Moraira, offer breathtaking views of the coast.

Inland, terraces of vines, almond and olive trees, and pine-covered hills create a peaceful landscape that is lovely for walking and cycling, especially in spring and autumn.

Gastronomy

Muscatel wine and Mediterranean flavours

Benitachell has a long tradition of growing muscatel grapes. The typical riuraus – arched buildings once used to dry the grapes into raisins – can still be seen in the countryside, and local wineries produce sweet mistela and white wines.

In the village and at Cumbre del Sol you will find relaxed restaurants serving tapas, rice dishes, fresh fish and international cuisine, while the beach restaurant at Cala del Moraig is a classic for lunch by the sea.

Schools

Education for every family

The village has a public primary school, and secondary education is available nearby in Teulada and Jávea.

International families appreciate Lady Elizabeth School, a well-known British international school located in Cumbre del Sol itself. Several other international schools can be found in Jávea, within a short drive.

Sports

An active, outdoor lifestyle

Snorkelling, diving, kayaking and paddle boarding are popular along the cliffs and coves. Hiking and cycling routes start right at the doorstep.

The village has its own sports facilities, and there are tennis and padel courts in the area. Golfers can play at Club de Golf Jávea and at Ifach Golf in Benissa, both a short drive away, and the marinas of Moraira and Jávea are ideal for sailing.

Culture & festivals

Traditions and viewpoints

Like every Valencian village, Benitachell celebrates its patron saint fiestas with music, processions, fireworks and traditional events, and the community of residents from many countries keeps a lively social and cultural life all year.

Do not miss the viewpoints of Cumbre del Sol and the cliffs at sunset – some of the most beautiful panoramas of the Mediterranean, with Ibiza visible on clear days.
